Newark Bronze Shields Issues Statement on the Death of Tyre Nichols

The following is a statement from The Newark Bronze Shields:

‘Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Tyre Nichols, who are experiencing unimaginable grief and trauma.

The jarring and shocking video displayed unthinkable violence toward Tyre; these actions are both deeply troubling and unthinkable.

As officers, we must treat the people we promise to protect and serve with dignity and respect, regardless of ethnicity or race.

The Newark Bronze Shields commit ourselves to support continued efforts towards improving officer and community relations.

As law enforcement officers, we have a duty to intervene.

We must work nationally toward a collective solution to eradicate patterns of hate, violence, and the use of excessive force.

These acts mitigate and minimize the ongoing work of exceptional officers who risk their lives daily to protect and serve our communities.

The officers involved in this incident did the exact opposite and should be held accountable.

We also recognize that the recurring images of these horrific acts of further brutality compound a community and a nation's feelings of trauma and ongoing mistrust of law enforcement.

We support peaceful demonstrations and respectful acts of solidarity”.
