BRONZE SHIELDS: Six Newark Officers Honored for Their “Courage Under Fire”

The Newark Bronze Shields honored six of Newark's finest officers for their courage, professionalism and restraint during a shots fired incident that injured two of them back in December 2021.
According to the association’s president Mr. Idell Robinson, members of the criminal intelligence section displayed discipline, commitment and an enormous amount of restraint as they took a suspect into custody.
On the evening in question, officers who were addressing quality of life complaints and following up on leads related to criminal activity approached a male suspect sitting on the porch in the area of 14th Avenue and 14th Street shortly before 8:40 p.m.
Unbeknownst to the officers, their Courage Under Fire was about to be put to the test.
President Robinson said officers began to walk up the stairs, and almost immediately, they were fired upon by the male suspect sitting on the porch.
The suspect was able to strike Det. Marshall and Det. Edert, who were first on the porch, at which point a struggle ensued.
Without hesitation, the other members of the team jump into action to help subdue and restrain the suspect.
Because of the selfless actions of these officers, a dangerous person and an illegal weapon were taken off the streets of Newark and possibly saving the lives of others.
“Their actions are to be commended, and the Newark Bronze Shields is pleased to recognize them,” Newark Bronze Sheilds President Robison said.
According to the organization’s website, The Newark Bronze Shields is the African-American police officers association within the Newark Police Department.
The organization was founded in 1959 by a group of African-American Police Officers who were battling racial discrimination within the Newark Police Department.
One of the founding members, Mr. Floyd Bostic, is still a member and serves as the guiding light for today's organization.
